Tanjung Lesung Special Economic Zone managers are working to develop sport fishing as the primary maritime tourism attraction in Pandeglang District, Banten. Budi Suhardiman Januardi, Head of the Pandeglang District Tourism and Culture Service, said the region's coastal tourism potential needs to be optimised through various activities that can boost the tourism sector.
Pandeglang has a coastline of 307 kilometres, one of the longest in Banten. Budi said this potential must be utilised optimally through activities that drive the tourism sector. Sport fishing development is one approach that can be pursued through the organisation of fishing competitions that bring together communities from various regions.
The 2026 Tuna Game Fishing Competition held in Sunda Strait waters attracted 299 fishers organised in 74 teams from various regions across Indonesia. The event combined fishing competition, maritime tourism promotion, and concern for marine resource conservation. Budi hopes more events can be held in Tanjung Lesung, particularly with easier access to the destination as the toll road becomes operational.
Ivonne Anggraini, Chief Operating Officer of Tanjung Lesung, said this year's fishing competition was the second since the previous one in 2023. She hopes the activity can be held again on a larger scale. Kunto Wijoyo, Director of Tanjung Lesung, said the event is also aimed at promoting Tanjung Lesung as a tourism destination for the Indonesian fishing sports community.
Ade Asnawi, a youth leader in South Pandeglang, said sport fishing development in Tanjung Lesung is hoped to proceed in line with increases in fish populations, tourist visits, and involvement by local communities. He hopes sustained collaboration among various stakeholders can attract more tourists and strengthen Tanjung Lesung's appeal as a sport fishing and coastal tourism destination.
