Wonosobo Regency in Central Java is believed to have enormous potential to generate economic value through carbon trading, supported by vegetation density, forests, and community involvement in tree-planting activities.
Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat said carbon trading in Wonosobo can provide economic benefits to the community. The minister explained that carbon generated from tree-planting activities can be offset with monetary value.
Jumhur emphasised that the Ministry of Environment is committed to ensuring carbon trading runs transparently so that communities can benefit from it. This effort is in line with the steps taken by Wonosobo Regent Afif Nurhidayat, who has mobilised the community to plant hundreds of thousands of coffee trees on the slopes of Mount Sindoro and Sumbing to maintain ecosystem balance and increase land productivity.
Beyond carbon trading, Jumhur sees economic potential in Wonosobo from the environmental tourism sector, including the Hot Air Balloon Festival, which is considered attractive to both domestic and international tourists. According to the Ministry of Environment, developing tourism based on natural beauty and conservation can become a regional advantage while improving the welfare of surrounding communities.
Developing this potential requires synergy between central and regional governments so that economic activities can continue without compromising environmental conservation. The ministry is optimistic that regions across Indonesia can develop into advanced and self-reliant areas by strengthening the tourism sector while maintaining ecological sustainability for future generations.
