Mohd Saufi bin Othman, a Malaysia Airlines copilot, was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta Airport after being found smuggling drugs into Indonesia. Officers discovered 26 kilograms of ecstasy, or approximately 70,000 tablets, in Saufi's possession.
According to investigations, Saufi is suspected of exploiting his position as aircrew to conduct drug smuggling activities. Officials stated that the suspect is believed to have brought drugs into Indonesia on two occasions and received payments of up to 220 million rupiah for such activities.
A urine test conducted on Saufi following his arrest tested positive for three types of narcotics: methamphetamine, ecstasy, and cocaine. Saufi will face legal proceedings in Indonesia in connection with this drug case.
The Malaysian government discussed the case during Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's cabinet meeting on Wednesday (5 August) local time. The Malaysian government stated it would not request Saufi's extradition from Indonesia.
In response to the incident, Malaysia also stepped up security measures by deploying police at several airports. This action was taken to prevent possible drug smuggling that exploits international flight routes.
