Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has instructed firm enforcement action against those responsible for illegal waste dumping in the Nagrak area of Cilincing, North Jakarta. He has also requested that the identities of those involved be made public as a deterrent and to reaffirm the government's commitment to enforcing environmental management regulations.

The instruction relates to waste piling up over approximately 5.8 hectares in the Jalan Reformasi/Inspeksi Kirana area of Nagrak, which operates outside the Jakarta provincial government's official waste management system. According to Pramono, the illegal dumping site is managed by private parties and has no connection to the Jakarta provincial government.

According to initial reports, the waste accumulating at the site is predominantly from the commercial sector, particularly hotels, restaurants and cafes. The private operators charge customers for waste transport but then dump it haphazardly in the Nagrak area. The land used remains disputed in terms of ownership.

Pramono emphasised that the Nagrak area was previously used as an alternative waste disposal site in 2003, but all official disposal activities were halted from 2015-2016 onwards and transferred to the Bantargebang Waste Management Facility. Nevertheless, illegal waste dumping and sorting activities continue to develop at the site.

To stop the practice, Pramono instructed all relevant regional agencies to take legal action without compromise, including summoning business operators, imposing administrative penalties, and installing waste dumping prohibition signs. The Jakarta provincial government is also preparing solutions for informal workers by redirecting waste pickers and sorters to participate in labour-intensive programmes managed by the regional government.
