Rory McIlroy shot a five-under 65 on Saturday to move into a tie for second place at the BMW Championship. The Northern Irishman improved from a two-over 69 on Friday that cost him his first-round lead, birdieing four of the last six holes to reach 12-under overall.

Patrick Cantlay of the United States is level with McIlroy at 12-under after shooting a 66. Wyndham Clark extended his lead at Bellerive Country Club to five shots with another 65, finishing the day at 17-under.

Clark double-bogeyed the opening hole but recovered with two birdies and an eagle on the eighth to turn at two-under. He then birdieed four of the next five holes before bogeying the last.

Chris Gotterup and Gary Woodland sit on 11-under overnight, with Collin Morikawa on 10-under and Im Sung-Jae of South Korea on 9-under. Robert MacIntyre of Scotland and world number one Scottie Scheffler each shot 68 to finish at 15-under, with England's Aaron Rai and Matthew Fitzpatrick a shot behind.

Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood both fell down the leaderboard after over-par rounds. Rose shot 73 to remain at 1-under, while Fleetwood's 74 left him at 2-over.
