Islam Makhachev has demonstrated his ability to remain dominant in the welterweight division, though he has not yet recorded a submission victory at the weight class. In his first two UFC welterweight bouts, he defeated Jack Della Maddalena and Ian Machado Garry by decision.

Makhachev's transition to welterweight has presented different challenges than he faced at lightweight. With heavier opponents than those he faced previously, Makhachev has found it more difficult to dominate in grappling exchanges, according to his record. Of his previous 27 victories, 13 came by submission, nine by decision, and five by knockout or technical knockout.

After his victory over Garry, Makhachev acknowledged the stiff competition he faced. "They are stronger, which makes it harder," Makhachev said of his welterweight opponents. With the win over Garry, Makhachev became the fifth fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two different weight classes.

Potential future opponents include Michael Morales, ranked third, and Carlos Prates, ranked first in the welterweight division.
