Leeds United agreed an £8.5m deal to sign Swiss defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. The 29-year-old was set to travel to England for a medical on Monday after the German club accepted an offer worth an initial £6.8m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons.
Elvedi, a versatile defender, is ending an 11-year spell with Monchengladbach. The Switzerland international has earned 73 caps for his country and featured in the squad for this summer's World Cup.
Manager Daniel Farke told reporters after a 4-0 pre-season win over Augsburg: "I've been working in football long enough to know everything is only final once the medical checks are completed and all the paperwork is signed. We've seen situations like this before." He said Leeds expected the move to be completed within 48 hours.
The signing would clear the way for fringe defender Sebastiaan Bornauw to join Hamburg on an initial loan with an option to buy. Leeds begin their Premier League campaign away at Nottingham Forest next Saturday.
