Kuwait's Interior Ministry announced Wednesday that security forces had thwarted a terrorist plot targeting a vital facility in the country and arrested a citizen allegedly belonging to ISIS, following security monitoring operations.
The ministry said in a statement carried by the Kuwait News Agency that investigations showed the suspect had received training in making explosives and operating drones, and had manufactured a drone intended to be used in carrying out the plot and attacking the vital facility.
The Interior Ministry said legal procedures were being taken against the suspect, who was being referred to the competent authorities to complete investigations and pursue necessary measures in accordance with the law. The ministry stressed it would deal firmly with any attempts to threaten Kuwait's security and the safety of citizens and residents, according to applicable laws.
The announcement comes amid a series of security operations Kuwait said it had foiled in recent months related to terror plots or activities. In April, the Interior Ministry said it had thwarted a plot aimed at financing terrorist entities and detained 24 people in connection with it.
Kuwait has experienced attacks and attempted attacks linked to ISIS in recent years. The deadliest was the June 2015 bombing of the Imam Sadiq mosque during Friday prayers in Ramadan. Security agencies later said they had foiled multiple plots and dismantled cells linked to the group, including in July 2016 when they announced stopping three terror schemes targeting a Shia mosque and an Interior Ministry facility, and in October 2016 when authorities said they stopped a car-ramming attack on a vehicle carrying U.S. soldiers.
