Great Britain's Romell Glave and Jeremiah Azu claimed the men's 100 metres one-two at the European Championships in Birmingham, with Glave winning gold in 10.09 seconds. Italy's two-time defending champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs withdrew from the final with an injury.

Azu finished second in 10.16 seconds, improving on his bronze from the 2022 championships. The 26-year-old Glave, who won bronze at the European Championships two years ago in Rome, dominated the race to claim his first continental gold medal.

Germany's Owen Ansah completed the podium. Jacobs, a surprise Olympic champion five years ago, dropped out of contention at the halfway mark.

Glave broke the 10-second barrier for the first time in legal conditions when he won his first British title in June. He has run sub-10 on six occasions this season in all conditions, including a victory over Jacobs in Italy. The 26-year-old was the fastest 17-year-old in the world in 2017 with a time of 10.21 but saw his progress disrupted by injury setbacks, including a back fracture.

Glave's recent improvement has focused on sharpening the first 40 metres of his race. He hit the front by the 30-metre mark and continued accelerating to the finish line.
