Reuters reported that local authorities confirmed five people dead in the initial incident. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a press conference at the airport that five people had died and five others were injured.

The Boeing 767 cargo plane operated by Amazon struck a road outside Miami International Airport. Video showed the aircraft skidding and thick smoke billowing into the air following the incident.

The Amazon plane landed at Miami Airport at around 14.00 local time on Sunday, arriving from San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, a Caribbean territory that is part of the United States. Flight number 7598 of the airline crossed the runway after landing at the airport, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration in a post on the X platform.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it would conduct an investigation into the incident. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company was working with local authorities and officials to understand what happened. "Our immediate priority is the safety and care of everyone affected," Nantel said. "We are doing everything we can to support them."

Following the crash, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced his decision to halt all flights at Miami International Airport while emergency response teams evaluated the site after the Amazon cargo plane overran the end of the runway. In a post on the X platform, the secretary said travellers in the area should prepare for significant delays and the possibility of some flights being cancelled. The Federal Aviation Administration has dispatched inspectors to investigate the incident.
