The handling of the case involving the sinking of KM Nurul Salsa in the waters of Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi, in mid-July 2026 has been escalated from preliminary investigation to formal investigation. The incident claimed four passengers' lives and left 15 people still missing.
Head of Selayar Islands Police Brigadier AKBP Didid Imawan said the case status upgrade was decided at a case conference on Saturday (8/8). During the investigation process, investigators have examined witnesses, gathered documents, and secured evidence related to the incident.
Investigators have secured numerous pieces of evidence including 37 life jackets as well as other items and documents still under investigation. According to Didid, investigators will conduct further inquiry to uncover the sequence of events and factors that caused the maritime accident.
Didid affirmed that the case will continue to be handled professionally based on facts and evidence obtained during the investigation process and in accordance with applicable legal procedures.
