Some people experience itching, redness, or rash on their skin after wearing a watch. This condition may indicate an allergy or irritation from watch materials, particularly metals like nickel, which are commonly used in watch components.

Complaints from watch use generally include contact dermatitis, which is skin inflammation after contact with certain substances. This condition can be caused by an allergic reaction to certain materials or irritation from sweat, friction, and moisture trapped beneath the watch strap.

Nickel on metal watch parts, such as the casing and clasp, is one of the most common causes of allergies. Nickel is known as a trigger for allergic contact dermatitis, frequently found in various everyday items, including jewellery and watches.

Symptoms typically appear on skin areas in direct contact with the watch, including itching, redness, and rash. In some people, symptoms can develop within a few hours to several days of regularly wearing the watch.

The first step to managing irritation is to remove the watch suspected of causing it and allow the skin time to recover. The irritated area can be washed with clean water and mild soap, then dried. A cold compress can help relieve itching and reduce redness. For those suspected of having a nickel allergy, choosing a watch made from more skin-friendly materials such as fabric, leather, or plastic straps, or nickel-free metal can help.

In certain conditions, a doctor may recommend a cream to reduce inflammation or antihistamine medication to relieve itching. Maintaining skin cleanliness in the wrist area is also important, as accumulated sweat and dirt can worsen irritation.

If the rash spreads, wounds appear, becomes infected, is painful, or does not improve after avoiding the watch, it is best to consult a dermatologist. The doctor can conduct an examination such as a patch test to identify the material triggering the allergic reaction.
