Prince Bakery Inc. of the Bronx, New York, is recalling five bread products because they may contain undeclared sesame or milk. The company said people with allergies or severe sensitivities to these ingredients face the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the affected breads.
The recalled products are Prince Sesame Italian Bread, Large Italian Bread, Large Sesame French Bread, Long Sesame French Bread, and Pan de Manteca Spanish Style Bread. They were distributed through bodegas and small retail markets in the Bronx and Westchester, New York. The breads are packaged in white bags with blue, green, and red lettering and images. Packages range from 8 to 12 ounces, and the items have a shelf life of 3 to 5 days but may be frozen.
The recall was initiated after an FDA inspection discovered that the Spanish Style bread, which contains whey milk in its ingredients, was distributed in packaging that did not include milk in the "Contains" statement. The company also found that some Italian and French breads lacked sesame in their Ingredients and "Contains" statements. The company attributed the problem to a temporary breakdown in its production and packaging processes.
No illnesses have been reported to date. Consumers who have purchased the recalled breads are urged to discard them. The company may be reached at 718-584-2127 Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
