Period life expectancy, which measures how long a person born today would live if current death rates remained constant throughout their life, offers a key indicator of a nation's health. The United Kingdom experienced two major turning points in this measure over a 25-year period.
Improvements in period life expectancy slowed markedly from around 2011 onwards. Then in 2020, the metric experienced a sharp, historically unprecedented decline during the COVID-19 pandemic.
