The Indonesian Association of Islamic Economists (IAEI) and the National Committee for Islamic Economy and Finance (KNEKS) are continuing to push for the strengthening of Islamic economy governance through the approval of the Indonesian Islamic Economy Master Plan (MEKSI) and the development of Islamic Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This effort was presented at a webinar on the dissemination of developments in Indonesia's Islamic economy and finance in the second quarter of 2026.
The speakers assessed that strengthening these two instruments is important to measure the contribution of the Islamic economy while uniting policies across ministries and institutions. IAEI Chairman Muhammad Syakir Sula said Indonesia has significant capital to become a global Islamic economy leader, as demonstrated by its Muslim population as well as academic and institutional support.
According to Syakir, the Islamic economy should not be viewed merely as business activity, but must become a collective movement or iqtisadi jihad to build national prosperity. IAEI is ready to strengthen collaboration between academics, regulators, industry practitioners, and society.
KNEKS Executive Director Sholahudin Al Aiyub said the Islamic economy has been incorporated into the National Long-Term Development Plan 2025-2045, the National Medium-Term Development Plan, and the Eight Priorities. According to him, MEKSI needs to have a strong legal basis, while Islamic GDP is needed to provide a more accurate picture of the contribution of the Islamic economy to the national economy.
