The Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan says the government is currently accelerating national waste management using pyrolysis technology. The technology is capable of processing waste into renewable fuel while complementing the development of Waste-to-Electric Power facilities (PSEL).
According to Zulkifli, the waste problem can no longer be handled by conventional means and requires acceleration through technological intervention. The government is promoting the use of pyrolysis technology to increase the amount of waste that can be converted into energy, in addition to the development of PSEL.
Pyrolysis technology has great potential because it can process waste piling up at final processing sites into renewable fuel equivalent to diesel, according to Zulkifli. If applied widely, the technology is targeted to handle approximately 20 per cent of the national waste problem.
A number of institutions and local governments are involved in applying this technology, including collaboration between the Indonesian National Armed Forces Army branch and local governments. The collaboration supports the acceleration of the Greater Bogor PSEL National Strategic Project 1 and the development of pyrolysis pilot projects in five locations: Bogor City, Bogor Regency, Semarang City, Bekasi City, and Jakarta Capital Region.
The government will have 13 PSEL locations in the near future as implementation of Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025. Zulkifli said the capacity would only be able to handle approximately 22 per cent of national waste generation, so complementary technology such as pyrolysis is needed. The success of the programme requires strong commitment from local governments, especially in providing land, accelerating licensing, and ensuring adequate waste supply.
