Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist whose immersive Infinity Mirrored Rooms and kaleidoscopic works captivated audiences worldwide, died on August 14 in a Tokyo hospital at the age of 97. Her studio and David Zwirner Gallery announced her death on August 26.

Ms. Kusama became an icon transcending the contemporary art world through her labor-intensive works, which drew on her Borgesian fascination with mirrors and the infinite. She was known for her openness about mental health struggles and her signature red bob haircut, attributes that elevated her status closer to that of a rock star or spiritual leader than a typical contemporary artist.
