Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that maritime transport management for the Thousand Islands will be handed over to PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) from 2027, taking over responsibility previously managed by the Jakarta Transportation Agency. This decision is part of a strategic effort to improve the transportation system between the mainland and islands.
According to Pramono, the measure is designed to ensure that residents of the Thousand Islands have access to and public transport facilities equivalent to those of residents in five of Jakarta's administrative city regions. He added that this policy aims to make travel easier and more efficient, whether for mainland residents travelling to the islands or vice versa.
On the same occasion, Pramono also announced that the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Jakarta project on the Kelapa Gading-Manggarai route, built entirely by the Jakarta Provincial Government, is targeted for opening in August 2026. The project, worth approximately Rp12.1 trillion, has a track length of 12.2 kilometres with 11 stations and a travel time of 28 minutes.
Pramono expressed his hope that the opening of the LRT could be carried out by President Prabowo Subianto. He also emphasised that the development and strengthening of the public transport network is one of the provincial government's priorities to improve connectivity and reduce congestion problems in Jakarta.
