Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said management of sea transport to the Thousand Islands will be handed over to PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) from 2027, taking over responsibility previously managed by the Jakarta Transportation Agency. This decision is part of a strategic effort to improve the transport system between the mainland and islands.
According to Pramono, the measure is designed to ensure residents of the Thousand Islands have access to and public transport facilities equivalent to those of residents in the five administrative city regions of Jakarta. He added that the policy aims to make travel easier and more efficient, both for mainland residents travelling to the islands and vice versa.
On the same occasion, Pramono also announced that the Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) project on the Kelapa Gading-Manggarai route, built entirely by the Jakarta Provincial Government, is targeted for inauguration in August 2026. The project, valued at around Rp12.1 trillion, has a track length of 12.2 kilometres with 11 stations and a travel time of 28 minutes.
Pramono expressed his hope that the LRT inauguration could be conducted by President Prabowo Subianto. He also emphasised that development and strengthening of the public transport network is one of the provincial government's priorities to improve connectivity and reduce congestion problems in Jakarta.
