Sumenep District Government has prepared 7.1 hectares of land for the development of a permanent People's School. The land, owned by the local government and originally intended for a sports centre, is located in Gunggung Village, Batuan District, across from Wiraraja University.
Head of Social Services, Women's Empowerment and Child Protection at Sumenep District R Erwien Hendra Laksmono said this land is the second proposed location because the first location did not meet the requirements. The submission documents are said to be ready and will be delivered directly to the Joint Secretariat for the People's School at the Ministry of Social Affairs office.
Based on field monitoring, the land is located not far from access to Trunojoyo Road and is flat. However, vehicle access to the location via village road still needs to be filled and widened. Erwien hopes construction can begin this year.
Special Staff to the Minister of Social Affairs Ishaq Zubaedi Raqib expressed appreciation for the seriousness of Regent Achmad Fauzi Wongsojudo in supporting the priority programme of the People's School. Minister's Technical Expert Ahmad Rifai advised Sumenep District Government to establish a joint secretariat to facilitate coordination of land submissions for the permanent People's School.
This permanent People's School is planned to facilitate students from the Integrated People's School (SRT) 49 Sumenep, which is currently located in the SKB Building in Batuan District. SRT 49, which has been operating since 2025, has 76 students at primary and junior secondary levels but its capacity is still very limited.
