Labour Minister Yassierli said the government is providing social security protection for informal waste sector workers through a 50 per cent subsidy on Work Injury Insurance (JKK) and Death Benefit (JKM) contributions. Under this policy, contributions that were previously Rp16,800 will now be Rp8,400 per month.

Yassierli said the subsidy is being provided to make social security contributions more affordable for informal workers. The policy applies until the end of 2026 and will then be evaluated by the government. The Minister hopes the policy can be continued so that more informal workers receive protection.

The Labour Minister said waste sector workers face considerable occupational risks, ranging from biological and chemical hazards, sharp objects, to physical injuries. Yassierli referred to them as "environmental heroes" because they play a role in reducing waste and supporting the circular economy.

The central government and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government launched a "Collaborative Action for Launching Social Protection for Informal Waste Sector Workers". DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo expressed his support for synergy between the central and regional governments, including protection for around 4,000 waste sorters at the Bantargebang waste treatment facility in Bekasi.

Pramono said that Jakarta, as a global city, must have an increasingly better waste management and environmental system. He hopes that collaboration between the central government, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, the Labour Social Security Agency, the business sector, and the community can ensure that all workers in the informal waste sector receive proper protection.
