The Last House is the latest sci-fi thriller starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as a husband and wife who struggle to protect their two children after becoming mysteriously trapped inside a house. Over more than 1,183 days, the family tries various ways to leave the house, but all attempts to break down doors and windows fail.

It later emerges that there is an invisible barrier that appears with the rain, preventing anyone from leaving the house or seeking help. The film then suggests that the force originates from alien creatures, although their identity, purpose, and reasons for deliberately imprisoning humans are deliberately left unexplained.

During more than three years of isolation, the family must confront dwindling food supplies, a house slowly deteriorating from endless rain, and increasingly worsening mental conditions. Fear, despair, and loss of trust in one another gradually become an enemy equally as dangerous as the threat from outside.

Towards the end of the film by Louis Leterrier, the family realises they cannot continue hiding inside the house. When the house begins to sink and the creatures enter, Jason makes an unexpected decision by choosing to show compassion instead of eliminating the creatures attacking them. This decision becomes the turning point of the story, allowing the family to finally break free from the house that has been their prison all this time.

The ending affirms that the film explores how humans face prolonged isolation and maintain empathy in the most impossible situations. The film releases on 7 August on Netflix.
