House Speaker Puan Maharani gave a brief response to PSI Chairman Kaesang Pangarep's plan to run in the same electoral district (dapil) in the upcoming 2029 legislative election. Puan stated that each political party has the right to field any of its candidates in any electoral district, saying this after inspecting preparations for the annual MPR session at the parliament complex on Wednesday (13 August).
Kaesang plans to run in Central Java Electoral District V, the same district as Puan. The district covers several areas of the Surakarta region, including Solo, Boyolali, Klaten, and Sukoharjo. In the 2024 legislative election, the district contested eight seats, with Puan receiving the most votes at 297,366, making her the third highest vote-getter nationally.
PSI Central Board Head for Politics Bestari Barus said Kaesang's plan to run as a candidate in Solo and its surrounding areas was because the region was already well-known to him, given that Kaesang was born and raised there. Bestari stressed that the choice of Solo and its surrounding areas as an electoral district was not intended to confront any particular party, since legislative elections are a contest among all parties and candidates.
