Netflix's adaptation of Alex North's bestselling crime novel "The Whisper Man," directed by James Ashcroft, brings together Robert De Niro, Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan for a thriller centered on a copycat killer preying on preteen boys. Producers Anthony and Joe Russo were involved in assembling the cast, according to production notes. The film follows Detective Amanda Beck, played by Monaghan, as she investigates the abduction of a boy in semi-rural New Jersey and the discovery of another child's body.

As Beck searches for connections to killings from 25 years prior, a widowed crime writer named Tom Kennedy, portrayed by Scott, relocates to his hometown with his traumatized eight-year-old son. Detective Pete Willis, played by De Niro, retired from the force but remained obsessed with an unsolved case tied to the earlier murders by a killer known as the Whisper Man. When Tom's son is abducted, it emerges that Pete is Tom's estranged father, and Beck requests the retired detective's assistance in the investigation.

Adapted by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer, the film explores the difficult dynamics between Tom and his father as they are drawn together by the case. De Niro delivers a performance marked by remorse and fatigue, particularly during psychological exchanges with the imprisoned original killer, Frank Carter. Other suspects emerge, including Norman Collins, portrayed by Hamish Linklater, a collector of murder memorabilia who has visited Carter in prison.

Director Ashcroft maintains tension throughout, though some late developments rely more on pulp crime fiction conventions than psychological realism. The ensemble cast sustains momentum despite occasional pacing issues, with Colin Stetson's score contributing to the film's unsettling atmosphere. The film offers solid entertainment as streaming content, though it does not approach the visceral intensity of Ashcroft's 2021 debut feature.
