The Ministry of Forestry has closed all climbing routes on Mount Gede-Pangrango from 7 to 11 August 2026 following a land fire in the Alun-Alun Barat Surya Kencana area of the Gede-Pangrango National Park, West Java. The closure was implemented as a precautionary measure to prevent the fire from spreading further and to ensure the safety of climbers.

Sadtata Noor Adirahmanta, head of the Gede-Pangrango National Park Management Authority, said that firefighting efforts began on Thursday (6/8) after officers from the National Park Resort in the Gunung Putri area received a report from community members managing the basecamp. The fire was fully extinguished with assistance from Ministry of Forestry personnel, Community Forest Police Partners, and volunteers.

Based on field monitoring, the area affected by the fire reached approximately one hectare, mainly consisting of dry grass and a small amount of woody vegetation. Although the fire has been extinguished, the Ministry of Forestry will continue monitoring and searching the area regularly over the next three days to ensure there are no secondary fire hotspots.

The Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni approved the temporary closure of all climbing routes at all entry points to the area. Sadtata stated that climbers who have already made bookings for 7 to 11 August 2026 can request refunds, with the refund application link to be sent via the official WhatsApp of BBTNGGP to the contact number of the group leader registered at the time of registration.

This closure policy is set out in Circular Letter No. SE.18 Year 2026 and is part of efforts to implement President Prabowo Subianto's instruction to prioritise protecting communities from the threat of forest and land fires.
