Iranian director Mohsen Gharaei is set to shoot a new film titled "Centrifugal Force" that will examine forced migration and family displacement among Iranians. Gharaei is currently at the Venice Film Festival with his drama "Falling House," which world-premiered in the festival's Orizzonti sidebar.
"Falling House" follows a modest family on the outskirts of Tehran facing the destruction of their home as part of a redevelopment project. The film centers on Rashid, a prison guard and family patriarch, who attempts to contain family rebellion while being accused of corruption.
"Centrifugal Force" will be shot in an undisclosed location outside Iran in Farsi and English with Iranian and international actors still to be specified. According to Gharaei's directors' statement, the film will be "a deeply human story about what happens when the home you love is no longer a place you can return to."
Gharaei, who is now living as an exile outside Iran, described the film as exploring what occurs when families remaining in Iran for years are forced to migrate. He said the story would examine how displacement challenges family bonds and reshapes understanding of home, family, and self, with distance from home making visible the distance between family members.
The project is being produced by exiled Iranian producer Milad Khosrav, who runs Seven Springs Pictures from Istanbul, alongside Oscar-winning producer Odessa Rae. The producers are presenting the project at the Venice Production Bridge market.
