The government continues to demonstrate its ambition to develop a large-scale food production project in Merauke. This effort began during the era of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with the Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE) and has continued with food estates in the current era under President Prabowo Subianto.
