Jim Rogers was in his early thirties in the mid-1990s, married to his wife Lorna with three young children, when the family emigrated from a small town in Worcestershire, England, to Perth. Life was going well until Lorna was diagnosed with melanoma. The family returned to England, and less than a year later she died.
Grief-stricken and struggling as a newly single parent to three young children, Rogers found the following months a blur as he worked to keep his family stable and manage his own grief. As time passed, it became clear he was not coping well. His parents insisted on treating him to a holiday in the sun, though he was reluctant to go.
While on the poolside holiday, Rogers sat next to someone named Tyler — a meeting that would change his life. The encounter sparked romantic feelings he said he had never previously experienced.
