The fire department at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley will conduct aircraft firefighting training beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8 through Friday, Sept. 11. The exercises will take place on Moffett Federal Airfield and run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. PDT each day.

The training will use a propane-fueled aircraft fire simulator designed to prepare the center's first responders for realistic firefighting scenarios. Because the simulator runs on propane, minimal smoke should be produced during the controlled training fires.

Flames may be visible to drivers on U.S. Highway 101 during the exercises, according to NASA officials.
