The city government said the first phase of a retention basin in the capital's eastern district has been completed and is now operational ahead of peak rainy season.

The facility is designed to hold runoff from several densely populated subdistricts that have regularly flooded when heavy rainfall continues for more than a few hours.

The relevant agency said a second phase will cover normalization of connecting channels and additional pumps. Work is planned to begin after a performance review of the first phase.

Residents near the site have asked for clarity on routine maintenance schedules, noting that similar facilities elsewhere lost capacity due to sediment buildup.
