Disney announced Saturday at D23 that Monstropolis, a new themed land based on "Monsters, Inc.," will open at Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2027. Michael Hundgen, vice president of creative at Walt Disney Imagineering's Walt Disney World Portfolio, said the company was "excited to bring Monstropolis to life for fans."
The land will allow guests to explore the world of the film's main characters, Sulley and Mike, and experience the monster city. According to Disney, visitors will meet citizens, taste unique cuisine, and encounter the everyday world of monsters. The company said the new land represents "two worlds—once separated—coming face to face, not through screams, but through laughter."
A centerpiece of Monstropolis will be Disney's first-ever suspended roller coaster, which Hundgen called "a showstopper." The ride will carry guests 40 feet high in four seconds and take them into the film's laugh floor, where guests board contraptions designed by the character Mike to harness both laughs and screams. Hundgen said the opening scene would rank "as one of the biggest and best" show-stopping moments in Disney's canon.
The coaster will be accompanied by an immersive theatrical experience developed in collaboration with Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic. The production will feature high-definition panels combined with physical characters and a new original song written exclusively for the park by composer Randy Newman. Hundgen noted the show would blend immersive theater techniques, optical illusions, and physical elements alongside humor and heart from the films.
The land will also include Archie's Scare Pig Pizza, inspired by "Monsters University," and Harryhausen's, a sushi restaurant featured in the original film. Hundgen said Harryhausen's will feature an animatronic sushi chef and menu items with names inspired by the monster world. Restaurants, merchandise locations, and the theatrical show will debut alongside the land's opening in 2027.
