Anthony Michael Hall has revealed that director John Hughes once planned a sequel to The Breakfast Club before Hughes passed away. Hall made the disclosure while appearing as a guest star on The Rich Eisen Show.

Hall said the last time he spoke with Hughes was around 1988, when Hughes called him alongside actor John Candy. During the conversation, which lasted several hours, Hughes discussed his idea to reunite the characters from The Breakfast Club against the backdrop that they had entered their 30s and were navigating life in the working world.

Hall admitted he did not know whether Hughes had put the idea into a script. "It was a very long time ago, so I think at the time he was really exploring the idea. I don't know if the script was written or not," Hall said, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

John Hughes died from a heart attack on 6 August 2009 at the age of 59. His death meant the sequel plan for The Breakfast Club never came to pass. The Breakfast Club, released in 1985, follows the story of five high school students from different backgrounds who serve detention together, and is considered one of the most influential classic works in the history of teen cinema.

Hall also recalled how prolific Hughes was during the production of The Breakfast Club. About two weeks after production began, Hughes approached Hall and told him about his next film idea involving the creation of a woman through a computer. That idea later developed into the film Weird Science, released in 1985 and again starring Hall.
