The United States set a world record in the mixed 4x100 medley relay on the opening day of the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California. The American quartet of Will Modglin, Van Mathias, Gretchen Walsh, and Kate Douglass swam 3:36.70, improving the previous world record by 73 hundredths of a second. That record had also been held by the United States.

Mathias posted a particularly strong breaststroke split of 57.30, while Walsh's butterfly leg of 54.99 marked the second-fastest in history for that stroke in the relay event. Douglass anchored the relay with a 51.01 freestyle performance over two lengths.

The Americans finished ahead of Australia, which recorded 3:39.30, and Canada at 3:43.22.

In other action, Lani Pallister swam the 1,500 meters in 15:38.62, the third-fastest time in history for that event.
