Fox has ordered Mammoth, a comedy built around a high school gym teacher who is buried in an avalanche in 1983 and rescued in the present day. The series is set to premiere in the 2027-28 season, representing an expansion of the network's live-action half-hour comedy slate.
Christopher Lloyd, co-creator of Modern Family, and writer and executive producer Danny Zuker are serving as co-showrunners. The series is based on a BBC Two show of the same name. Mark Linsey and Angie Stephenson of BBC Studios Los Angeles and Mike Bubbins, creator of the BBC series, also executive produce.
The lead character, Coach Tony Mammoth, is described as "a larger-than-life high school gym teacher" who emerges from the ice four decades later to discover that the world has transformed around him. According to the series description, he maintains his attachment to 1980s culture and customs, including a Burt Reynolds mustache and a Trans-Am, only to find that modern-day "rules, relationships, and realities bear little resemblance to the world he once knew."
Lloyd and Zuker both won multiple Emmy Awards as producers of ABC's Modern Family. Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn said in a statement that the premise offered "huge laughs, deep heart, and characters everyone will relate to."
