Iran will not open the Strait of Hormuz until the United States meets several conditions, said Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, on Sunday (9/8/2026). According to Press TV, he stated: "The Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until the US improves its attitude and stops threatening the Islamic Republic."
The conditions laid out by the senior Iranian official include a halt to military operations against Iran and its allies, the lifting of sanctions and naval blockade, the withdrawal of US forces from areas around Iran, and compensation payments.
US President Donald Trump previously announced he had cancelled an attack on Iran given a peace agreement being negotiated, which includes opening the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement on the nuclear programme.
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday (5/8/2026) that Iran and Oman have agreed on the geographical details of the shipping route for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
