Houthi militia controlling Yemen launched an attack on a Saudi Arabian oil refinery near the Red Sea, causing a fire at the facility. The attack was confirmed directly by Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree on Sunday (9/8).
Saree said that the Houthis successfully targeted the Aramco refinery in Jizan using unmanned aircraft and the strike hit its target accurately, according to AFP. He described the attack as retaliation after Saudi drones entered western Yemen's airspace.
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy said emergency response teams successfully controlled the fire at the Jizan refinery with no casualties. The ministry's official statement did not specify the cause of the fire.
On the same day, the Houthis also reportedly attacked Al Makha Port, an area controlled by the Yemeni government. Two military sources from the Yemeni government confirmed the Houthis used missiles and drones in the attack, while local residents reported hearing a series of explosions in the area.
The Houthis have not yet responded or confirmed the attack on Al Makha Port. This conflict occurs within a broader geopolitical context, with Saudi Arabia as a close ally of the United States, while the Houthis are said to have links with Iran.
