Britain's Arthur Fery defeated Australia's James Duckworth 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-4) at the Cincinnati Open on his return to competition following his shock run to the Wimbledon semi-finals last month. The 24-year-old, seeded 32nd in Cincinnati, will face fifth seed Alex de Minaur in the next round.
Fery, the lowest-ranked player to reach Wimbledon's semi-finals since Ivanisevic in 2001, had been given a wildcard into the grass-court Grand Slam while ranked 114th and having never previously progressed beyond the second round of a major. His success lifted him to a career-high ranking of 36th. He took time off after Wimbledon before training at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.
Novak Djokovic revealed he is managing an underlying health condition after losing 2-6 6-4 6-4 to Argentina's Thiago Tirante. The 39-year-old world number five dropped to his hands and knees during the second set and took a medical timeout. "It's just a condition that I have, health-wise, that has been bothering me for the past couple of years," Djokovic said, adding that it causes "a lot of issues, especially when it is humid and it is hot."
Djokovic, making his first appearance since losing in the Wimbledon semi-finals in July, had never failed to reach at least the last 32 at Cincinnati since debuting in the tournament in 2005. Tirante, ranked 50th, described the victory as the "best win of my career", saying: "I managed the nerves of playing a legend like Novak. It was all so much pressure."
Fellow Briton Cameron Norrie was eliminated, losing 3-6 6-3 6-3 to Germany's top seed Alexander Zverev.
