Series creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw said the second season of the FX comedy Adults will shift focus from last year's coming-of-age storylines to interpersonal drama within the friend group. The priority storyline centers on a love triangle involving characters Paul Baker, Issa, and Anton that was set up in the season one finale, the pair said.
"It's a full triangle: Anton and Paul Baker have a connection; Paul Baker and Issa are dating; Anton and Issa are best friends," Shaw said. "So we wanted to do all sides of that justice. It wasn't going to be an illicit, sleeping with each other behind everyone's back kind of plot line." The creators cited the film Challengers as a reference for how they approached the storyline.
In the season two premiere, Issa decides to ignore a kiss she witnessed between Anton and Paul Baker, instead focusing on her anger over Paul Baker's secret friend group. Shaw said the character would need time before confronting the deeper issue. "She won't be ready to look at this thing head on until a few episodes later," Shaw said.
All eight episodes of Adults premiered on FX in May 2025. The show follows five friends sharing a house in Bayside, Queens, and is executive-produced by Nick Kroll. The network announced the season two renewal five months after the first season, shortly after Kronengold and Shaw's wedding.
